Eric Choi Wins Prestigious Literary Award
Toronto-based writer and editor Eric Choi is
the recipient of Canada’s top literary prize for speculative fiction.
The Dragon and the Stars, a unique
collection of science fiction and fantasy short stories co-edited by Eric Choi
and Derwin Mak, has won the
2011 Aurora Award in the category of Best Related Work in English.
Published by DAW Books, The Dragon and the Stars features eighteen
original stories (a lucky number in Chinese numerology) by writers of the
Chinese diaspora from Canada, the United States, the Philippines, Hong Kong and
Singapore, with an introduction by New York Times bestselling author Tess
Gerritsen.
First presented in 1980, the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards (“the
Auroras”) have been given out annually since 1982. The Aurora Awards are
administered by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, a
non-profit organization.
Eric Choi’s short fiction has appeared in the books The Astronaut from
Wyoming and Other Stories,
Footprints,
Northwest Passages,
Space Inc.,
Tales from the Wonder Zone,
Northern Suns,
Tesseracts6 and
Arrowdreams as well as the magazines Science Fiction Age and
Asimov’s Science Fiction. Choi’s work will next appear in the upcoming
book Rocket Science,
edited by Ian Sales, which will be released in April 2012 by Mutation Press.
An aerospace engineer by training, Eric Choi holds a bachelors degree in
engineering science and a masters degree in aerospace engineering, both from the
University of Toronto, and an MBA from York University. He has worked on a
number of space projects including the MOPITT instrument on the NASA Terra
satellite, the RADARSAT-1 satellite, the Canadarm2 on the International Space
Station and the meteorology instruments on the Phoenix Mars Lander. In
2009, he was one of the Top 40 finalists (out of 5,351 applicants) in the
Canadian Space Agency’s astronaut recruitment campaign. He is currently a
business development manager at the Canadian space company
COM DEV in Cambridge, Ontario.
